How To Install A Security Door
Carefully follow these six steps below to safely install your new security door.
Step 1. Gather Necessary Tools And Materials
- Choose a metal security door with attached hinges to make the installation process as easy as possible.
- Make this selection based on your measurements of the existing door it will soon cover.
- All the needed equipment for the mounting should be included with your purchase.
- Doublecheck the manufacturer’s instructions to see if you have all the necessary equipment.
- Now follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the installation process.
Step 2. Measure The Opening And Cut Z Bar
- Use a tape measurer to accurately measure the height of the door.
- Measure from the lower inner frame to the top inner frame at this time.
- The piece included in the initial purchase that attaches to the metal screen door is called the Z bar.
- Wear gloves and safety glasses during the installation.
- Cut the Z bar using a hacksaw to fit with the door opening.
- Try cutting the Z bar 3/16-inch smaller than the width of the door frame.
Step 3. Ensure It Fits Properly
- Place your metal security screen door inside the door opening.
- Make sure this fits properly and securely.
- Have a partner hold the door in place as you begin drilling.
Step 4. Hang Metal Screen Door
- Use your power drill to secure the door to the brick molding.
- Do this by using the screws that are included in the manufacturer’s installation hardware.
- Drill your screws through the holes featured in the hinges.
- Drive these screws through the Z bar and into the molding.
- Make sure it is hung evenly by repeatedly opening and closing the door.
Step 5. Secure Header
- Put your header piece above the security screen door.
- Find the precut holes in the header.
- These holes are there so you can determine where to place the screws.
- Match your screwdriver blade size with the size of the screws.
- Screw the header into its place with your screwdriver.
Step 6. Install The Expander
- Once you have opened the door, slip the expander piece along the bottom of the door.
- This is a strip acting as a barrier, which is needed to keep debris from collecting in the area.
- Use an electric screw to get the expander into its proper place.
- Open and close your door to make sure there is enough clearance once the expander is in place.
